Practicing law for over 17 years, Ms. Karmel has acquired extensive litigation and trial experience. In 1999, Ms. Karmel opened her own practice concentrating on Matrimonial, Family and Criminal law litigation. Ms. Karmel currently represents clients in negotiating prenuptial and mid-nuptial agreements, separation and settlement agreements and actions for divorce that include equitable distribution, maintenance, visitation, support, and custody. She also has an active Family Law practice with a concentration in neglect, abuse, termination of parental rights, as well as custody and visitation matters. She has been certified by the First and Second Judicial Departments as a law guardian qualified to represent children in custody and visitation disputes.

Ms. Karmel served as an Assistant District Attorney in Kings County from 1991 through 1996. As an Assistant District Attorney, Ms. Karmel litigated and investigated misdemeanor and felony cases and advanced through several bureaus, including the Domestic Violence Bureau, Investigations Bureau, Felony Trial Bureau and Major Narcotics Investigations Bureau. Ms. Karmel subsequently served as Special Counsel at the New York City Department of Investigation and was later promoted to Deputy Inspector General.

From 1997 through 1999, Ms. Karmel was in private practice litigating and defending a wide variety of cases, including labor law, premises liability, and general liability.

Ms. Karmel received her law degree from the American University, Washington College of Law and is admitted to practice before the Courts of the State of New York, New Jersey, Maryland and the District of Columbia. She is a member of the Family Law Section of the New York State Bar Association, the Family Law Section of the Brooklyn Bar Association, and the Women’s Bar Associations of New York and Kings Counties. She has lectured on matrimonial issues in conjunction with financial programs designed to protect assets and retirement benefits.
